Former site of Kilmatogh.
You won’t find 'Kilmatogh' on any map of County Leitrim...
That's because it has disappeared!
Sometime during the night of August 3rd, 1982, the small community of Kilmatogh in rural County Leitrim, in the west of Ireland, ceased to exist.
On August 4th, around 3:28 AM, local residents reported seeing a massive fire which was visible on the horizon from as far away as Blackross town (2miles distance). The fire's epicentre was determined to be at Kilmatogh.
When Garda investigators arrived to the outskirts of what should have been the 83-strong community, they discovered a smouldering, burning 'fissure', measuring 1,000 yards in length and approximately 500 yards in width.
It is thought the Kilmatogh residents were killed in the fire and that none survived.
A month later, the authorities closed the case on Kilmatogh and no further explanation was ever given.
